Freedom.

The promise of it drew brave men and women to distant shores to start a new life—and, in time, to establish a new form of government: a government based on the principles of civil and religious liberty.

Our nation’s founders taught their children about freedom—what they sacrificed to obtain it and how future generations must work to maintain it. They knew that freedom will only endure as long as citizens are willing to uphold and defend it.

For nearly two centuries, Hillsdale College has taught generations of students what they must know in order to preserve the legacy of freedom our American ancestors began. Arming the minds of students—on campus, in K-12 classrooms, and through online courses—with knowledge of the highest things, including America’s great heritage of liberty, is our enduring mission.

But together, we can and we must do more.

We must strengthen the work that takes place on our campus so it can radiate further than ever before, teaching Americans of all ages—anytime, anywhere—the meanings and conditions of freedom.

Dear Friends,

We live in a time that is dangerous but also promising. It is dangerous in its inclination toward tyranny. It is promising in the mass of people who recognize the threat and seek a way back to freedom.

We at the College think that the answer to tyranny is teaching. Since 1844, we have provided generations of students with the kind of education necessary to preserve freedom. We have become the best at that. We have held to it through some of the greatest storms in our nation’s history, including today’s.

Beyond our campus, there are millions more who want to learn from us. We have built the means to teach them, and we want to make those means stronger and to teach increasing millions. We think this is the way to save our country.

And then there are people like you, without whose friendship we could not carry out our work. You learn with us and help us radiate the activity of the College everywhere.

Our new capital campaign, the Teaching Freedom for Generations Campaign, is dedicated to teaching all who wish to learn—today and for years to come—the meaning of self-government and the conditions of freedom.

We will continue to amplify that teaching in the years ahead, with your help.
